Street Trompo Tacos

For today’s Taco Tuesday, I was fully stocked at home. Not because of any specific reason; it was just one of those days when I didn’t feel like driving. But for the sake of this blog, I still ordered my tacos to be delivered to my door.

I ordered from a taco restaurant on Uber Eats called Los de Tamaulipas, located at 13630 Veterans Memorial Dr. It’s actually not too far from home. Driving there myself would’ve saved me about $13 between taxes and the tip.

I must say, the consistency of their branding is a bit weak, considering their name on Maps is similar but not the same. Their name on Maps is simply Taqueria Tamaulipas, which I think sounds much better. Los de Tamaulipas means something along the lines of “the people from Tamaulipas,” referring to the people and tacos from this specific region or state.

Funny enough, in the apartment complex where I live, delivery food drivers always get lost. But only this specific group of drivers. It has never happened with any other delivery drivers, not even taxi drivers. I passed out on Ubers on my ride home at 2am and they always drop me in front of my door, with no issues.

I understand why. We have three different gates, and two of them don’t work. However, the only working gate is always open. Then, after they manage to get past the gate, there are two sections of buildings: one side with numbers and the other side with letters. And somehow, they always manage to go to the wrong gate and then drive to the wrong section. What usually happens is that I end up on the phone with them a few times, they irritate me, and I eventually have to walk to the gate to grab my shit.

But this time, he made it all the way to my door. He figured it out. He did what the other drivers were lacking: he made the effort to find out where I actually lived. So when I opened the box, I was surprised by the presentation. It looked just like the picture. All I did was copy and paste everything onto a small salad plate.

I ordered the Trompo tacos, and I was upcharged for cheese, avocado, and potatoes, which was absolutely worth it. These were double-corn-tortilla street tacos. They also came with a small bag of onions and cilantro, which I honestly didn’t think I needed this time. The red color of the trompo meat was perfect. It was my first time trying a trompo, and I was blown away by the thickness of the meat. It was perfectly sliced, thick enough to stay juicy and flavorful while still being tender. The cheese was shredded queso fresco, and they put about three slices of avocado on each taco, which was a very generous amount. The potatoes were cooked the best way possible, to the point where they practically melted in my mouth.

And since you already know, the perfect pairing for tacos is the Tequila Reposado Dirty Martini, or what I call the El Dorado Martini. It accentuated the flavors and the entire experience of the meal. I’m not sure if they had alcohol over there, prolly not, but I happened to have all the ingredients at home, so I was able to keep my Tuesday tradition alive.

So, an important detail I skipped before is that Los de Tamaulipas is actually a food truck. I wanted to leave this detail for the end of the blog because I discovered this after I ate the tacos. And I was surprised; I never thought a food truck had Uber Eats service. I’m always amazed when a small kitchen is able to create wonders.

Once again, this was my first time trying trompo tacos, and I was blown away by the meat. The only thing is that next time I eat them, it will be at the trestaurant. Anyone who orders food from Uber Eats knows that your driver will probably take your meal on a little ride around the city before finally bringing it to your door. So, unfortunately, my tacos were pretty cold by the time they arrived. I’m not someone who likes my food burning hot, but it’s not cool when it’s cold either. After so many deliveries, I still haven’t learned my lesson. I guess this is the price I pay for staying home on Taco Tuesday.
